Skateboard Wheels - What Size Do I Need?
The size or dimension of your wheels is the diameter of the wheel. This is displayed in mm. How big your wheels should be depends on your skating style and the height of your trucks. The surface where you usually skate and your personal preference also play a role. To make it easy, we summarize everything in a handy size chart.
Matching your wheel size to your skating style:
Skating on the street: | 50-53 mm |
Skatepark: | 51-55 mm |
Bowl, pool, ramp: | 54-59 mm |
Cruising: | 56-65 mm |
What is the difference between large and small skateboard wheels?
The difference is in the start and the maintenance of speed. Small wheels accelerate faster, but do not maintain the speed for as long. This is very practical on street spots with a short run-up and at the skate park. Large wheels do the opposite: accelerate less quickly, but do maintain the speed for longer . Recommended for skaters who like mini ramps, bowls and like to make speed in concrete skate parks. With one push you can go a lot further. Ideal if you like to skate longer distances without having to push off all the time.
Matching your wheel size to your trucks:
To avoid wheelbites, it is better to align your wheels with your trucks. Wheelbites happen when your deck hits your wheel while steering or when you land. If your skateboard hits your wheels, you will stop abruptly and fall forward. Bruised wrists and faceplants are better avoided during a session. That is why we recommend aligning your wheels with your skateboard trucks as well.
Low trucks: | 50-53 mm |
Mid trucks: | 51-56 mm |
High trucks: | 53-60 mm |
How hard should my skateboard wheels be?
The hardness of your wheels affects your grip, riding feel and comfort when skating.
The harder the wheels, the less grip. With hard wheels you can more easily powerslide and slide over curbs and ledges . This also makes them last a lot longer and they get flatspots less quickly. These are worn parts in your wheel from sliding a lot. Especially technical (street and park) skaters choose medium-hard to hard wheels to perform their slides more easily.
Medium-hard wheels are ideal on very smooth surfaces such as wood and extra polished concrete.
Soft wheels have more grip , which allows you to take turns better at high speeds. Soft wheels also ride more comfortably on rough roads. Soft wheels are usually chosen by filmers or cruisers.
To make it simple, we have created the overview below:
Very soft wheels: 73-85a
- Perfect for cruising and filming.
- Rides very comfortably and quietly over rough road surfaces.
- Gives you a lot of grip in the corners.
Soft wheels: 86-95a
- Excellent for wood or very smooth concrete.
- Slide well.
- Provides good comfort on rough road surfaces.
Hard wheels: 96-99a
- We recommend it for beginners.
- Ideal for skate parks and flat surfaces.
- Good balance between grip and slides.
Very hard wheels: 100-104a
- Last extra long.
- Perfect for slides.
- Accelerate faster on hard surfaces.
